Original poem "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost
Creativity!
Prompt
My unit is on making choices and how those choices affect our lives. Robert Frost's poem, "The Road Not Taken" is a perfect example of the influence choice has in our lives.
Starting Your Poem (Pre-Writing)
Think about how and why you make the choices you do.
Imagine you had to make a decision between two items or situations, such as debating between going to NCSU or UNC.
How would you choose one thing over the other?
How would you feel about having to make that decision?
Is this all a choice or does chance come into play?
Writing Your Poem (Drafting)
Start your poem describing two things you may need to choose between. For example, I may need to decide whether I want to go to Walmart or Target to get my groceries tonight.
In the next two lines, describe the dilemma and how you feel about this dilemma. End this stanza with two lines describing how you perceive one of the options.
In the second stanza, describe the next option and how these options are similar.
In the third stanza, let your reader know how you are contemplating this scenario. Share your thought process during this scenario. You can let your reader know that you know what decision you will make in the end of this stanza
In the final stanza, tell what scenario you would choose in five lines.
Now, create a title for your poem!
My Poem:
"The Store Not Shopped At"
By Hailee Klauka
Two stores diverged in a parking lot,
And sorry I could not shop at both
And as one avid shopper, long I waited
And stared at one brightly colored sign
To where the building entrance stood;
The other building, just as fancy,
And having perhaps the better deals
Because it was calling and needed customers,
Though as far as I could see
They had the same exact deals
For the exact same heels,
And both today are equally as appealing
In shoes, clothes, and jewelry.
Oh, I decided to wait to go to one.
Yet knowing how life can change,
I wondered if I could ever shop again.
I share this with you as I am sad.
Somehow time changes.
Two stores diverged in a parking lot, and I,
I took the one that caught my eye,
And that has made all the difference.
Model Poem:
The Road Not Taken
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
